Porzellansammlung (Porcelain Collection): pure luxury

While on his grand tour of the European courts, Augustus the Strong caught the maladie de porcelain,
which eventually resulted in one of the most important collections world-wide of this exotic,
originally Chinese and Japanese luxury product. It is a pity that his dream of an Asian-style
porcelain palace on the right bank of the River Elbe, as a stage for the presentation of his collection,
did not come true. Star architect Peter Marino had the idea to marry modern luxury
with Baroque opulence, filling the light-bathed galleries of the Zwinger with an abundance
of gourd vases and lidded vases, life-size one-horned rhinos, and small statues and tableware
from Meißen in a splendid presentation against wall sections with precious silken linings.
Marvel with me at this collection of most exquisite pieces during a one-hour tour, at the end of which
you will know what “White Gold” means, whether there really are onions in the “blue onion” pattern
and why a particular set of monumental blue-and-white vases is called “dragoons’ vases”.
