Park Pillnitz: Far East and magical blossoms
Schloss Pillnitz (Pillnitz Palace) with its curved roofs was Augustus the Strong’s dream ofa Far-Eastern pleasure palace; later it became the summer residence of the Saxon rulers. Linked to
the River Elbe in grand style by a flight of outdoor stairs, the palace and the surrounding gardens
are worth seeing, and not just in the flowering summer months. In early spring our camellia,
which has reached tree size, already enchants visitors to the English garden with its carpet
of pink flowers. Follow me on a one-hour walk past the Wasserpalais (Waterside Palace)
and the Bergpalais (Hillside Palace), two buildings with an exotic allure, to the orangery building,
the palm house which was only recently replanted, past water fountains,
magnificent flower beds and powerfully fragrant lilac.
Tip: Good for a stop and a morning walk en route to the Elbsandsteingebirge (Elbe Sandstone Mountains).
Also good for topping off the day, with an option to travel back by ship.
