Meißen: history – wine – porcelain
Overlooking the River Elbe and dominated by the majestic castle hill with the prominent spiresof the Gothic cathedral, the row of the Domherrenhöfe (canons’ courtyards), the roofs
of Albrechtsburg castle and the former bishop’s seat, thousand-year-old Meißen welcomes its visitors.
Follow me on a one-hour stroll along narrow lanes, past magnificent Renaissance portals
and the idyllic courtyards hidden behind them, enjoy grand views of the vineyards on the opposite banks
of the river, up to the towering castle hill, and then treat yourselves to a glass of exquisite local wine
in one of the rustic wine taverns.
Later, in the demonstration workshops of Porzellanmanufaktur Meißen, you can see how the ‘White Gold’
is being given its traditional or modern shapes and ornamentation and signed with the hand-painted
blue swords by the Meissen artists just like in times past. A meal in the in-house restaurant,
served on Meissen tableware, might be the highlight that ends your stay at the innovative visitor centre.
Tip: Combined with a visit to Moritzburg this makes an entertaining day excursion.
