Pirna: Canalettostadt

Pirna, a small and cosy town on the River Elbe between Königstein and Dresden, characterized
by little lanes and surviving sections of the mediaeval town walls, is truly worth a visit. Just like
the Venetian painter Bellotto (known hereabouts as Canaletto) 270 years ago, you can stand
on the market square and let your eye wander from the town hall, the Gothic Canalettohaus
and many colourful and ornate Renaissance and Baroque façades to the gables of the huge hall
church of St. Marien and up to the former Sonnenstein fortress. Let us go and find the birth house
of Johannes Tetzel, seller of indulgences and a strong opponent of Martin Luther,
or the Teufelserkerhaus, so called because of the devil depicted in its oriel.

Tip: Music lovers can combine this tour with a concert in the restored church of St. Marien,
e.g. during the “Sandstone and Music” festival.
