Innere Neustadt (Inner New Town): Baroque and concrete

The Goldener Reiter (Golden Horseman) stands in a place where the contrast between the modern and
historic urban fabric could not be any starker! Due to Dresden’s destruction in World War II,
the statue of Augustus the Strong is today surrounded by pre-1989 blocks of concrete prefab flats
lining the pedestrian area at the beginning of the Inner New Town. Strolling down this leafy avenue,
however, we finally reach Baroque structures: testimony to our most famous prince-elector, under whose
reign this city district, which had been destroyed by a great fire, was rebuilt with Baroque town houses.
Great figures of eighteenth-century cultural life such as Goethe, Schiller or Kügelgen stayed here.
Quaint arcades and courtyards are home to boutiques, small restaurants, shops offering
traditional handicraft products, and art galleries.

The face of the Baroque new town is characterized by long vistas as in Königstraße, which provides
a view of a mighty Asian-inspired building, the Japanisches Palais (Japanese Palace). Today,
it presents examples of distant cultures, such as the Damaskuszimmer (Damascus Room). Next
to the neighbouring Bellevue Hotel our one-hour discovery tour of the Inner New Town ends with
a fantastic view of the old town: the Canalettoblick, named so because of
Bernardo Bellotto’s famous picture.

Tip: This is an ideal extension of the old town tour.
